Apples, Rave (Full Bushel)
These are the pie apples.
Rave is the first apple off the trees at Bay Growers in Thornbury, and it is the one people have been asking about since it started showing up in the boxes. Crisp, juicy, sharp enough to actually taste like something. It is a Honeycrisp cross, so it holds its shape in the oven instead of turning to mush in the pan. John at Bay Growers put it plainly. The Rave will be great for pies.
One bushel is 40 pounds, number one grade. Roughly a dozen pies with plenty left in the bowl for the week.
That works out to about $1.88 a pound. Premium apples at the grocery store this week are closer to $4, and that is for fruit you can buy anywhere.
We drive to Thornbury so you do not have to. It comes with your box or to your hub, no extra charge.
Rave season is short. A few weeks and we move on to the next variety.
Half bushels are available at $40 if 40 pounds is more apple than your kitchen wants.
